Introduction

Hello,

My name is Rubienne Dagun. I was born in the Philippines and moved to the United States when I was eight years old. I've lived in Alaska for eleven years now, and throughout my time here, I have pursued an education and created meaningful relationships. In the Philippines, I love spending time with my family along with my cats. My two cats are named Katsu and Udon, I believe they're very sweet and polite despite what others have said about them. In my free time, I indulge in many of my hobbies. I enjoy playing video games, reading, writing, and creating art. I like to try new things that involve making something fun and beautiful. I have worked with colored pencils, watercolor, gouache, and acrylic paint. I look forward to trying oil painting since I could never recreate the unique look that they have when I'm using a different medium. I am not a confident artist, but I am hopeful that with enough patience and practice, I'll be able to create a piece that I'm proud of.

My relationship with art has been with me ever since I could hold a pencil. My first encounter with art was when I was a little girl going to church. As I would get bored during the service, my eyes would follow the stained glass artwork that decorated the cathedral. Back then, I didn't look any deeper into what the art was portraying. I thought it was created to serve one purpose, to be beautiful. However, years later I realized that art could be used to tell a story. Upon this realization, I fell in love with art. Despite not attending any art museums or events, I found the internet to be a great place to see different works of art. I discovered amazing artists whose work inspired me. A piece that I found compelling was Vasili Pukirev's 'The Unequal Marriage'. The painting's focus is on the bride, she is visibly unhappy. Her candle is held low, and the redness on her face indicates she has been crying. Seeing this piece made me question the history and inspiration of other artists' work.

Pukirev, V.V. (1862) ‘The Unequal Marriage’. Moscow, Russia: Vasili Pukirev.

  2. I think you're really going to enjoy this class. Boy, you are right. That bride doesn't look like she's a happy camper and it looks like the groom could be older than her father.
